Audience Research
To discover what and how soap operas attract specific target audiences, I decided to question 20 males and 20 females.
1.Are you male or female?
2.How old are you? 6-12, 13-19, 20s, 30+
3.Do you watch soap operas?
4.If no then why not?
5.If yes, which ones? Hollyoaks, Neighbours, Eastenders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale
6. Is there a soap you really dislike? If so why?
6.Who is your favourite character?
7.Who is you least favourite character, as in one you do not wish to watch?
8.What are you favourite storylines?

1. So I could get even and fair answers, I asked 1/2 of each sex. This meant I could find out the needs of both sexes, what do they want to watch? Are they interested in different things? Are some soaps aimed at one gender more than the other? Is there something better on the tv at the time of the soap?. I could also find out which sex watches more soap operas and find out the reason?

4. 2 of the 6-12 year old boys both said they do better things e.g play on the Xbox/playstation. The girls 6-12 who didn't watch soaps said similar things, 1 mentioned they have to get ready for bed by the time Eastenders comes one. This suggests Eastenders is aimed for the older adult market for when their children go to sleep.
Teenagers mainly watched soap operas, including boys. However the 2 boys that didn't watch soap operas say that they think soaps are boring and for old people.
None of the men in their 20s watched soap operas, some claim because they never got into it, others say their lives are too busy. 2 Of the women said they were too busy working also.
The people above 30 years old all basically said they didn't watch soaps because they were trashy and unrealistic.
My perception of these results is that soap operas mainly target the female market. Alot of the men who did watch soaps had girlfriends or wives so were influenced into watching the soaps. Even the young boys who watched soaps said they watched them with their familes so I think the type of soap you like is based on your enviroment.
5. (People were allowed to tick more than one soap)
Hollyoaks: Very popular amongst the teenagers of both sexes. Almost all teenagers watched Hollyoaks aswell as one 20 year old female.
Neighbours: More popular amongst the male teenagers, when asked they said it was because of the attractive cast. They also liked the setting, they said it was more interesting. Young females also watched Neighbours.
Eastenders: Popular on both sexes, (mainly women) through every single age catergory. Women over 30 all watched Eastenders and so did the Men.
